Raising the bar in IBD management
 

Module 2 is hosted by Professor Stefan Schreiber and Professor Séverine Vermeire, who will explore the concept of holistic disease control and how best to incorporate this to make for more ambitious treatment goals in IBD management.

Learning objectives

  • Discuss the clinical treatment goals that should be applied in practice, and how these have evolved overtime to become more stringent
  • Describe which treatment goals are important to patients and how these may differ from clinical treatment goals
  • Explain the concept of holistic disease control and how this relates to improving patient outcomes in IBD
  • Employ shared decision-making techniques in clinical practice to define ambitious treatment goals for individual patients as part of holistic disease control

Embracing shared decision-making

The Module 2 host webinar led by Professor Séverine Vermeire and Professor Stefan Schreiber in conversation with patient advocacy leader, Salvo Leone. The session occurred live on Monday 10th May at 08:30-09:30 CEST. This discussion-based session focused on exploring the burden that patients with IBD experience despite remission, the value of shared decision-making and tools that can be used to support it, and guidance on steering challenging conversations and reaching consensus. If you missed this meeting, please watch the video below. Multidisciplinary team working in practice

Watch gastroenterologist Professor Ailsa Hart and Consultant Nurse for IBD Lisa Younge in this session as they discuss different steps to improving quality of life in patients with IBD through multidisciplinary team (MDT) working. This session provides guidance on establishing an effective MDT that meets the needs of the patients, the challenges that healthcare professionals are often presented with, as well as the best ways to optimise patient care when access to the MDT is limited.

Salvo Leone
European Federation of Crohn's & Ulcerative Colitis Associations (EFCCA), Italy

 

Since 2000, Salvo Leone has been an active patient advocate. He is Treasurer of the Sicilian Association, President of the National Federation and General Director of the National Association. In 2018, he was appointed Chair of EFCCA, the European Federation of National Associations dealing with chronic IBD. His work focuses on improving the well-being of patients with IBD and their partners and families, increasing public awareness of IBD, supporting patients, and liaising with associated healthcare professionals and related organisations to encourage both medical and social research.


Professor Ailsa Hart
St Mark’s Hospital and St Mark’s Academic Institute, London, UK

 

Professor Hart is Consultant Gastroenterologist at St Mark’s National Bowel Hospital and Dean of St Mark’s Academic Institute. She has published widely in clinical, translational and basic science aspects of IBD research. She is a member of the Governing Board of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation, IBD Clinical Research Group Committee for the British Society of Gastroenterology and is a member of the International Organisation for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.


Lisa Younge
London North West Healthcare NHS Trust, UK

 

Lisa Younge is a Consultant Nurse for IBD at St Mark’s Hospital and has won the British Journal of Nursing national award for Gastrointestinal/IBD Nurse of the Year. Her work has led to multiple publications, shaping IBD nursing across the UK and Europe. At Crohn’s & Colitis UK, Lisa co-leads the IBD Nursing Programme, focussing on increasing the number of IBD nurses across the UK and offering support and training to nurses, including advice lines and service improvement. She has been instrumental in the recent introduction of the first Crohn’s and Colitis UK Nurse Specialists.


Professor Charlie Lees
University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK

Charlie Lees is Professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Edinburgh, a UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellow, and Consultant Gastroenterologist in the Edinburgh IBD Unit. Professor Lees is centrally involved with the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation, is the Chief Scientists Office Specialty Lead for Gastroenterology in Scotland and Chair of the British Society of Gastroenterology IBD Clinical Research Group. His team are working on predicting outcomes in IBD, using routinely collected NHS data and dedicated multi-modal prospective cohorts to build predictive models.
